Rain Screen System (the ultimate in protection)
What is a rain screen system:
The rain screen system is an exterior cladding infrastructure that sits away from a buildings WRB system, creating an air cavity, and while rain screens have been common in Europe and Canada they have now began to emerge into the United States.
A Rain screen System Offer numerous benefits in Moisture- Management and energy efficiency:
Supporting WRB Systems by keeping moisture away from the wall assembly, prolonging the life span of your WRB
Water vapors behind cladding and insulation can escape by means of evaporation reducing the potential for mold
Helps reduce hot and cold air and thermal movement through the wall, reducing energy costs
The air space between your cladding and WRB allows gravity to take affect allowing water drainage and with certain flashings in place allows water to be redirected back to the exterior of the buildings cladding
Bug screen is placed at the top and bottom all the way around the house. This shows the 2x2 that is placed a ¼ down from the bird blocks allowing for air flow.
Note the channels between the siding and building paper, which allows the water to escape and provides constant airflow.
No need for caulk that would eventually fail in time. With the rain screen system, the water passes right by.
